Congratulations to Maurice Maltbia:

Our Second Quarter Living the Vision Award Winner

Maurice Maltbia simply finds fulfillment in being a help to others.

In his mind, it’s never about him. It’s about everyone else, whether it’s the Teachers of Tomorrow clients or his colleagues. So imagine his surprise recently when CEO Trent Beekman announced Maurice as the winner of the 2022 Q2 Living the Vision Award during The Company Townhall.

The quarterly award is granted to one TOT employee who exemplifies the vision behind the work we do here and is nominated by fellow employees and leaders.

“I was shocked, didn’t even expect it,” Maurice said. “I’m usually not that person that gets selected for an award, so I was totally caught off guard when the CEO was talking about me. I had to look at the screen, like `That is my name on the screen.’ It’s actually me.”

Indeed, it was.

Maurice, who works as a software developer for Information Technology, was identified as the person who best exemplifies the company’s vision of making a lasting impact on our children and communities by being the nation’s leader in developing quality educators.

Vice President of Technology Mukesh Dhannawat nominated Maurice not only because he felt that his overall character, work ethic, productivity, and willingness are exemplary, but he also views Maurice as someone who is a self-initiator and always goes above and beyond.

“I’m super excited for him – that he was elected for this award,” Dhannawat said. “I really feel like he exemplifies the MVP. He exemplifies the values that we have at Teachers of Tomorrow. He is really dedicated to the mission, he always talks about how we can grow to be the No.1 provider in the mission, not just in quantity but in quality of teachers and of products that we put out there.”

Interestingly enough, Maurice says he never set out to be in a leadership role, but that began to shift as leadership within the company began to change. He recalls a book about a couple of leadership coaches called “Unleashed: The Unapologetic Leader’s Guide to Empowering Everyone Around You,” which led him to become more open to taking on a leadership role.

“It was a good book in terms of finding out what good leadership looked like,” Maurice said. “I knew that that’s the kind of leadership I wanted to provide. Normally I would shy away from that type of role because it just didn’t seem like something I wanted to do. But seeing a good example of it gave me (the thought).  I felt like I could help the team have a better experience because I had a vision of what good leadership looks like. A lot of it is just not being in the way.

“That’s part of how I help the team. When they just need to move forward, I’m not in the way. If they need help or I see someone is stalled on a particular issue, that’s where I kind of fill the gap. I just kind of clear the path for them to do what they do best.”

We took the time to find out more about Maurice, his role with the company, and his approach to helping others.

Can you tell us how you approach your role as a software developer?

Maurice: “I’ve been in software development for a while. Actually, I started writing software as a child when my mom gave me my first computer.

“It’s something I’ve been doing for a while, so it’s something I enjoy. I’m a problem solver. I don’t really think about rewards. I can work and realize I haven’t taken a break in like eight hours. I can work the whole day just sitting here and working. It just goes by quickly for me because I enjoy it.

“We have a great team, so… I like helping people and working with our team. I get the chance to work with some great developers, as well. I enjoy the work, so that’s reward enough.”

Question: You said your interest in developing started as a child when your mom gave you your first computer. What was the spark for you?

Maurice: “I’ve always been curious about how things work. So, I had this computer and I was in this actual bookstore and saw something about changing the graphics mode on the computer.

“I was curious with how I could do things with it rather than just operating a word processing program. I could build something with it. So that natural curiosity, I spent a lot of time just making my own programs.”

Question: How do you try to make a difference on a daily basis in your role?

Maurice: “I used to always look for someone who I could learn from, like a mentor. That never happened. It’s usually I’m by myself. I will be working with people, but I’m usually not learning from them. I realized that I’m the one who should probably try to share what I know.

“I don’t feel like I know a lot, but maybe compared to some of my peers, I do.

“So I’m always thinking I can learn from someone and grow because I have these expectations.

“Being with Teachers of Tomorrow, I felt like I have to be the person I’ve been looking for. Now, I have the opportunity to be a mentor, to help guide a team, to offer my experience and knowledge, to help the team grow. I’ve been on a lot of teams where that wasn’t the case. Everyone was kind of looking out for themselves. My approach is to offer what I know to help everyone on the team grow. I’m not trying to hold back information to make myself appear greater or better. I’m trying to share what I know to make the whole team grow.”

Question: What is it like knowing you are passing your knowledge on to the next person?

Maurice: “I feel like it actually kind of comes back to you. It kind of makes your job easier. You’ve shared information and empowered people on your team to make decisions – to have the critical knowledge to make decisions. I don’t have to be the one with all of the answers. Even if I’m not here, I feel like my responsibility is to make it so that if I’m not around, this team keeps going. They have the knowledge and ability to keep going.

“So what it feels like to me is a self-sufficient team, a team that has everything they need to just keep going up.

“A lot of people are afraid of that, like `I’m going to put myself out of a job or something.’ So they make it like they are needed for job security. I don’t feel like that. I’d rather give and empower a team and see them shine, really.”

Question: What is it you enjoy most about your job?

Maurice: “One of the greatest things is I learned to develop a sense of empathy for whoever I’m providing a solution for. When I deliver a solution and they say, `Great, that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for,’ that’s a really satisfying statement because as a development team, there are a lot of discussions and when we deliver something there is a lot that has gone into it.

“So what may seem like a really simple solution, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Some of the most simple things that you see, and use can be very complicated behind the scenes. It’s satisfying when we really hit the mark and deliver what’s needed. That’s one of the most satisfying things.”

Question: When it’s all said and done, what kind of impact do you hope to have made on the future of Teachers of Tomorrow and those coming behind you?

Maurice: “I don’t really think about that. I’ve noticed I’m in a lot of situations where I’m the first, the first person that looks like me in a certain situation. I’ve been in a lot of places like that so I don’t really think about that exactly. I really just think about doing the best I can.

“Like I said, I’m not really motivated by that. I just focus on what I do and doing the best I can at it and always continue growing. Hopefully, people who come behind me will have an easier time because of the things … I think a lot about long-term things, long-term strategy, and how what I do affects or could hamper the growth of the company technology-wise.

“As a team actually, what we lay out makes it a smoother path for even further growth.”

Maurice is certainly doing his part to further Teachers of Tomorrow’s vision of making a lasting impact on our children and communities by being the nation’s leader in developing quality educators.

Let us share one of our best-kept secrets with you… you’ve never heard of a teacher recession because it doesn’t exist. Teachers are recession-proof.

Alerts Blog 03

The last time Americans were severely impacted by a recession was back in 2008. During this time, 2.6 million Americans lost their jobs. In the midst of COVID-19, we’re potentially facing a new recession head on – one which could be worse than that of 2008. Imagine how many more jobs will be displaced. Now is a good moment to ask, “Is my job safe?”

Money is attractive; there is no argument there. Part of the appeal of oil and tech jobs (among many others) is the serious cash they shell out. The problem with economy-dependent jobs such as these – is that the cash flow can dry up, almost overnight. When it’s good, it’s good. When it bad, it’s devastating.

Perhaps part of the allure is the risk. If you’re motivated by forever wondering, “How will I continue to pay my bills if I get laid off”, it’s understandable. However, many of us don’t feel comfortable allowing that question to play out. Fortunately, you don’t have to. Becoming a teacher is not only one of the most rewarding jobs in the world, it’s also the most secure.
If you’re in an unstable industry and fear for your job, why risk it? Learn how to become a teacher and take comfort in knowing your job is safe.

Alerts Blog 04

Time after time, teachers always climb to the top of recession-proof job lists. What makes teaching recession-proof? Teachers are responsible for educating our children. During a time of economic instability, this responsibility doesn’t suddenly evaporate. As a country, it is our collective duty to educate our youth and prepare them for the world. Teachers are the ones who assume this duty.
In a recent census, it is estimated that roughly 74 million of the U.S. are children. That’s 74 million minds to shape and 74 million children in need of teachers. Are you ready to help one in need? Become a teacher today!

Alerts Blog 05

Teaching is a noble profession. The fact that it comes with job stability is an added bonus. It’s more important than ever to continue educating our youth. Teachers help mold the minds of future generations. Education generates creativity, innovation and hope – three things which are desperately needed in times of uncertainty. While the rest of the economy falters, teachers steadily trailblaze tomorrow’s path, securing a better future for our youth. No matter where America’s economy stands, teachers will always play a crucial role in supporting the development of our country.

Support our future by supporting our children and claim your recession-proof job today.

Leave it to our culture to come up with a new word in the midst of a crisis – Zoombombing. While the word and the action sounds funny, it is not.  Allegedly, there are some people that continue to hijack audio and video streams during virtual classes – with porn and racist comments utilized.  As teachers explore virtual classrooms for the first time – beware and be ready.

EdSurge has a great article on Zoombombing that is very helpful with this in mind.

As Zoom grows in popularity, so too do episodes of internet impropriety begin to escalate.

“Like journalists and investors, educators from New York City to the University of Southern California have reported instances where their virtual meetings were hijacked by miscreants.”

USC is providing resources to prevent Zoombombing – https://keepteaching.usc.edu/faculty/quick-start-toolkit/zoom/zoom-security-settings/

Plus 6 tips to deter Zoombombing

And from Zoom – https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/03/20/keep-the-party-crashers-from-crashing-your-zoom-event/

We are happy to provide additional tips for Virtual Teaching if you are just getting started as well.

Finally – it should be highlighted not to record virtual sessions and to avoid posting pictures of virtual sessions on social media; FERPA and privacy concerns should be heeded.

The post Rapidly Declining Enrollment in Teacher Preparation – Except Texas! appeared first on Teachers of Tomorrow.

]]>
There is a teacher shortage and it is getting much worse because the number of people enrolling in traditional teacher preparation programs dropped by over 340,000 between 2010 and 2016.  The Center for American Progress went deep into education school enrollment in a report entitled “What to Make of Declining Enrollment in Teacher Preparation Programs” and found out what we have been saying for quite some time – it is really bad and getting worse.

And it’s not just enrollment.  There were 28% fewer graduates from educator preparation program over that same time frame.  The only bright spot is alternative certification programs which showed a significant increase in enrollment in a few key states – like Texas.

Here are the problems as highlighted by the paper –

  • There are 1/3 fewer students enrolling in teacher preparation programs in 2018 than in 2010
  • If you take out alternative certification – the enrollment declined by 43%
  • There are 28% fewer students completing teacher preparation program sin 2018 than in 2010
  • 80% of educator enrollment identify as white
  • 77% of teachers are female
  • Declines in enrollment hit every race

Here is the bright spot

  • Alternative preparation programs that are not based in higher education experience a 42% increase in enrollment – which drove a slight uptick in the national enrollment in preparation programs
  • Of the 19,158 completers from alternative certification, 12,243 were from Texas. Of that, 6,022 were from Texas Teachers of Tomorrow. We account for 49% of the Texas total and 31% of the National total of teachers certified through alternative certification.
  • Men and African American enrollment increased in Texas
  • Most states saw an increase in enrollment of Latinx Teachers

The author then profiles two states – Texas and California.  She points out, correctly, that our enrollment has rapidly increased while our completion has not. This is because we have rolling enrollment that only expires after three years. Because we attract career changers into teaching the convenience of completing the program on their own time is critical in recruitment.

She is also the first to point out that there is a study that our teachers performed as well as traditionally trained teachers as it relates to student achievement.  She left out one of the more impressive stats – 72% of our teachers are still teaching after 5 years – an incredible retention rate.

She is also correct – many people enroll and do not complete. They find teaching is not right for them and never apply for a job.  This is a good thing.  The low cost to entry means we attract more people – but some realize this is not the career for them.

The negative she points out is there are some other studies and the union is not fond of alt cert.

So Texas has all these programs – mainly Texas Teachers – and we have rapidly increasing enrollment and very few teacher shortages. Then she highlights California which she seems to support which is doing the usual – scholarships, residency programs, STEM recruiting etc – but she doesn’t point out any impact from these programs. And when you look at the graph, California has had a 48% decline in enrollment in educator preparation programs.

We are very proud of the impact we have had.  We have placed over 7,000 teachers so far this year in 8 states.

And we are just getting started.

There is a great article that highlights why we do what we do at Teachers of Tomorrow – helping people change their careers so that every student has a great teacher.  In Indiana, Police Captain Michael Elder has transitioned from the force to the classroom, now teaching 11 and 12-year-olds math, science, social studies and English.

This is his first year as a teacher for Ralph Waldo Emerson School 58 in the Indianapolis Public Schools district.  Elder always dreamed of becoming a teacher.

“I was an instructor for IMPD for probably 29 of my 32 years that I was there, so I always liked to teach,” said Elder.

“I found this program, Teachers of Tomorrow, and it was a transition of taking my bachelors and turning into an education degree,” said Elder, “We talked and talked and in October of last year we were eating dinner and my wife goes, ‘is this something you really want to do?’ I said yeah, and she said, ‘let’s look into it.’”

“This was the area that I patrolled on late shift,” said Elder, “A lot of things have changed since 1986.”

This is such a great story and why we do this. People want to give back to the community by becoming a teacher through a program like Teachers of Tomorrow.

Congratulations to Michael Elder for teaching in Indiana!!

Not exactly earth shattering news – but the Center for American Progress has a new report that student loan debt adversely affects teacher diversity.  Diversity does help student achievement as the point out but 82% of the current teaching workforce is white.

According to the report, 91% of African American and 82% of Hispanic/Latin students trained to teach had student debt compared to just 76% for White students. African American teachers had much higher student debt as well – $26,405 vs $13,662.

Retention of diverse teachers is less than white teachers as well. The theory of the report is that since the financial burden is so high, African American/Black and Hispanic/Latin teachers either cannot afford to take a teaching salary and pay back the loans or take the teaching salary and have to leave because of their student loans.

Note that alternative teacher certification programs like Teachers of Tomorrow, the cost is so much lower we actually see much higher levels of teacher diversity. In our program, only 54% of our teachers are white – much less than the national average.

Cost is most definitely a factor. And we would love to see teacher salaries increased so that student loans are no longer a factor in teacher diversity – but don’t forget about the great teachers that are coming in every day from programs like our!

Just a few years ago, online teacher training was frowned upon. But as enrollment in traditional educator preparation programs continues to drop, online educator preparation is the only way we can fill open teaching positions.

Teachers of Tomorrow has had one of the most comprehensive online teacher training programs available that lead to teacher certification.  And now you can take a tour of the program!

Our online curriculum provides teachers the necessary tools to succeed in the classroom. And the way the program is structured and delivered ensures our teachers stay motivated to complete the training.

We hope you will take a look – or share with others who might want to teach.  Each of our state programs is customized to meet all state requirements for teacher certification.

Every child deserves and great teacher and it takes a great curriculum to ensure that teacher is ready.

HOUSTON (October 10, 2018) – The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) has announced that Jeff Wheatcraft is the Texas Teacher of the Year and the Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year. Wheatcraft is a middle school Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) teacher at Alamo Heights Junior School in San Antonio. Wheatcraft came into teaching by completing the Texas Teachers alternative certification program (ACP) in 2006 earning his Art teacher certification. At the same time, he earned his science teacher certificate through Texas Teachers and transitioned into science during his second year of teaching.

There are more than 350,000 teachers in Texas and Jeff was selected through a lengthy process as the best teacher in the state. A panel of judges composed of representatives of Texas teacher associations and last year’s Texas Teacher of the Year finalists select the finalists from the 40 Texas Regional Teachers of the Year — one elementary and one secondary teacher from each of the 20 Texas Education Service Center regions. TASA then selects the Texas Teacher of the Year. In the past, Wheatcraft has been nominated twice for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

He will now compete with educators from across the country to be the National Teacher of the Year as selected by the Council of Chief State School Officers. Wheatcraft will participate in one-of-a-kind professional learning opportunities designed to hone communications skills, expand knowledge of education policy, and grow teaching and learning practices. The goal of this programming is to elevate the voices of teachers and ensure that teachers are leaders in state and national policy conversations. The National Teacher of the Year (NTOY) is chosen from the State Teachers of the Year by a national selection committee representing the major national education organizations. This spring, the National Teacher of the Year will be introduced to the American people by the U.S. President.

When asked about teaching, Wheatcraft said, “There has not been a day in my teaching career that I wake up and don’t want to go into school. I love working on lesson plans that create something unique and inspiring and then sitting back and thinking – I can’t wait to see what the students are going to do with this!”

Wheatcraft was working as a swing dance instructor, but he and his wife knew he needed a career path better suited for a new family. His wife realized that with such a passion for teaching and watching people learn as an instructor that he would be great in the classroom. They saw a billboard from Texas Teachers and they wrote down the number and called that day.  He joined the program that month and he started teaching that fall.

“We could not be prouder of Jeff and his accomplishments as a teacher,” said Vernon Reaser, CEO of Texas Teachers. “We had just launched in 2005 to attract great people like Jeff into the teaching profession. To see all that he has accomplished and how many lives he has positively impacted truly inspires all of us to do even more!”

Wheatcraft will have a very busy schedule for the next year as the Texas Teacher of the Year but will also make sure his students continue to make progress in middle school.

When asked why he thinks he is the Teacher of the Year, Wheatcraft stated, “My students are successful because I find out what they truly need – not what the state or the school says they need. I find out what each student truly needs to be successful and make sure they get that throughout the entire year.”

Teachers of Tomorrow Achieves 1,000 Enrolled

HOUSTON (July 1, 2018) – Teachers of Tomorrow announced today that it has more than 1,000 teacher candidates enrolled in its educator preparation program in its newest states. The program began expanding into new states in August 2016 and its educator preparation program has been approved in Florida, Nevada, South Carolina, Indiana, Michigan and Arizona. Most of the teachers enrolled will be eligible for hire this fall to help alleviate critical teacher shortages across the country.

“We have worked hard to launch our new state programs to ensure we can meet the needs of our school district partners this year,” said Vernon Reaser, CEO of Teachers of Tomorrow. “In spite of critical teacher shortages in these states, we have created a program that speaks to so many across the country who want to become teachers with an affordable and efficient route to their own classroom.”

Founded in 2005 as Texas Teachers, the program successfully worked to meet Texas school district teacher needs by recruiting, preparing and certifying more than 45,000 teachers. Teachers of Tomorrow was created in 2016 for the national expansion. The expansion success of six new states in two years far exceeded expectations.

Another significant milestone achievement is that more than 10,000 candidates have applied to become teachers in the Teachers of Tomorrow program in the six states. Some will ultimately enroll, but many will not meet the admission requirements to the program.

“Teachers of Tomorrow has always been about getting teachers hired to fill critical positions so that every child has a great teacher,” said Reaser. “Enrolling 1,000 high quality teacher candidates means that our new district partners across the country will have the staffing they need this fall.”

Word of mouth, district referrals, digital marketing and billboards are used by the Teachers of Tomorrow team to find career changers who want to teach.  A local team works with school districts to identify staffing needs and a highly skilled team of advisors helps candidates work through the complex teacher licensing process.

Information about the program in each of the states can be found at:
